Burning the Midnight CD’s

During the past week, I have taken a couple of evenings to import some CD’s that I have had on the shelf for several years. Most of these CD’s I purchased because I liked one song on the CD - and, well, back in 1999 there was no such thing as an iPod.

I have got a treasure trove of stuff - some good - some not so good. None eclectic enough for DaveE’s taste. Most would get a dour look from Schultize. But hey - some of the tunes are nice - and some is cutting edge (well for 1997).

Here is a nice cross sampling of what I’ve imported (and listened to this week):

Face Value - by Phil Collins - this is a classic album - every song is incredible - and for those of you who have a melancholy side - there’s some real gut wrenchers. Some chick really did old Phil wrong back in the day.

Cracked Rear View - by Hootie & the Blowfish - what else can I say except I was one of the 25 million who bought the album. Were you?

The Hits - by Garth Brooks - All the best from the king of 90’s country music.

Jesus Freak - by dc Talk - Can you believe that I own it? Wow.

Slow Revival - by Bryan Duncan - yeah, yeah, his theology is bad. But I am a sucker for this guys voice. He has mad vocal skills.

Right now - I have 1,213 songs on the iPod. Let’s take a SURVEY. If you have any of the above referenced CD’s - let me know. I’ll do the tally later.

Time to get back to importation of musica.

I have Jesus Freak by DCTalk. It’s technically a cool record but got kind of sick of them ripping everyone else’s music off. The highlight for me is What Have We Become. You would have never guessed, eh?

I’ve got 1,445 songs in the Pod but I need to get some CDs back from my parent’s basement to import myself.

For diversity just grab the free downloads every week and they stack up over time.

I have the Garth and dcTalk CD, but neither of them are on my iPod. I can’t locate the dctalk CD, but have the live “Welcome to the Freakshow” CD from the Jesus Freak tour. Great snare drum on that live CD.

An aside - my .02 - red ink is for highlighting, not the main body of text. It hurts the eyes dude.

Oops - I have Slow Revival as well. It was part of my 11 CDs for a penny from Sound and Spirit record club in 1995. Duncan has extremely mad skills. It’s sickening and beautiful at the same time.

Face Value — check. Bought it for In the Air Tonight. Would love to hear the Uber Tuber haul off on a kit like that one day.

Might have The Hits. I’ve got all of Garth’s stuff up through In Pieces (which was his best album IMHO).

I am proud to say I have none of the above CD’s in my possession. Although I did usher once at a Phil Collins concert at the Omni. Surprisingly, he put on a great show … closing with “In the Air Tonight” and “Take me Home.”

And although I didn’t own any Garth Brooks CD’s back in the day, I did enjoy his music when I was drunk.

I have a grand total of about 100 songs in my IPOD. Since I enjoy human interaction and think rudely listening to an IPOD in public is akin to talking on a cell phone, I use mine only for running. The tune has to rock to make the cut.

I have Jesus Freak, but none of the others. Gimme a break, the others are a bit before my time.

I just finished importing most of what I lacked a couple weeks ago, so my iPod is currently at 3,307 song files (that includes some that are just clips). I still have quite a few classical CDs that I haven’t imported yet because I don’t have the time to categorize them as I prefer.

I have the Jesus Freak album, but none of the others. I do have a different album from Duncan, though. My pod is up to about 2,000 tunes, but many of those are actually teachings and not music. What a great tool.

For the sensitive Mr. Williams, one can use the ipod during one’s commute and not come across as rude. In addition, it can be listened to with others at the same time which makes for a fun experience. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water, Mr. Manners!!

P.Diddy,

I assume you mean the other Mr. Williams (no relation).

Don’t take umbrage so easily. When he writes, “Since I enjoy human interaction…” you’ve got to remember how few humans will interact with him.

Somebody must have told him about the “Quick! Brad’s coming! Everybody pretend you’re listening to your iPod” thing… who spilled the beans!? ;)

That explains it … I thought the whole world had become addicted to their iPods.

Pat, 2000? Please … there can’t be 2,000 good songs out there. Its like that Seinfeld episode where they debate the % of good looking people in the world … maybe 5%. The same can be said of music. There are maybe 500 good quality songs that have been composed throughout history … and 1/2 that number is from 2 bands (the Carpenters and Quiet Riot).

Brad, why’d you go after Pat for having a measly 2,000 songs? ;)

Let’s do the math here: Brahms composed at least 150 works (some multi-volume), Beethoven wrote 9 symphonies, 7 concertos, and 30 piano sonatas, and J.S. Bach completed around 1200 works. Add to those guys Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, and Aaron Tate—you’ve got at least 2,000 good quality songs for the iPod.

Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me
They long to feel the noize
Girls grab the boys
We get wild, wild, wild,
We get wild, wild, wild…

Brad - Is that what Joyce is like? Karen Carpenter meets Kevin DuBrow?

Jeffrey,

You confuse me with someone who has a clue about this topic. Although that has never stopped me before from stating my opinions. When and if I start my own blog, it will be titled “No Factual Basis,” because even though I sound very confident in my theories, there is usually no factual basis whatsover to support anything I say.

Hugh,

I was thinking more along the lines of “Country Farm.” They have the hair and attitude of Quiet Riot but the soothing vocals of the Carpenters. Instead of “I’m leaving on a jet plane,” it could be, “I’m leavin on a John Deere tractor.”

Sincerely,

The Social Orphan

I just proved my theory that I don’t know what I am talking about. Was it Peter Paul and Mary that sang “Leaving on a Jet Plane and not the Carpenters? It really doesn’t matter, “Country Farm” is so talented that they can cover both.

All I could think of after your comment was “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy“…

If you had…one shot……

Seeing as we’ve recently established on John’s blog that there have been at least 500 good quality songs in the history of music, there must be that one song that I absolutely must acquire with my newfound Code of Power….
