sticking it to steve

The future finally arrived tonight for the DawgNation.  A long awaited match-up between the Dawgs and the Chickens in Columbia proved to be the petri dish by which Matthew Stafford officially became a living, breathing college football quarterback.  Up until tonight, he had been a phantom, a myth – with just a wisp of an appearance against Western Kentucky.

But lo – and behold – Joe T (who gets no love from the Georgia faithful) went down in the first quarter with an ankle injury, never to return.

Stafford threw some lasers – like bb’s from a pellet gun threading the defense like a needle.

He also threw three interceptions.  But all in all, he was afforded time to learn and grow as a QB because the Defense was stout and unrelenting.

The Dawgs beat the Chickens 18 to zero.  Zippo.  Zilch.   Nada.

Yes, Steve Spurrier was shut out – can we say that again, zippo, zilch, zero, nada – for the first time in 19 years (when he was coach at Duke).

Stick that in your visor, Stevie boy.

Google earth – wow!

I have tubed about an hour this evening touring the planet.  Yep – touring the planet.  I spent a little while looking at Yosemite National Park – and then I cruised on over to San Francisco – checked out PNC Park, where Steroid Boy smacks baseballs into the bay – then I rolled on down to L.A. and checked out Malibu beach and the Santa Monica Pier (I wanted to find the scene of the crime where O.J. murdered those two people, but maybe another night) – I then got a wild hair and cruised on over to Leavenworth, Kansas, a place I haven’t been since 1978.  I cruised around the town looking at the Federal Pen and the Army Base – and I found our old apartments on Stonleigh Court.  I traced the steps that I’d take to walk to Howard Wilson Elementary School – all in an effort to avoid the school bus. In Leavenworth – the 3rd graders were on the same bus as the high schoolers – and I was the geek then that I am now – and they picked on me.  I walked about a mile to school – in snow in the winter – and uphill!  Across softball fields that are still there.  WOW!

And so – after my journey – I offer you this photo of a parcel of land in Dawson County, Georgia.  It is 20 acres.  Not quite 40 and the redemption to be found therein.  But it is #1 with a bullet.

We’ll see how it works out.

Be blessed folks.  Good night.

Dawgs are 1-0, amongst other things

For those of you who were comatose this weekend, or perhaps spent the weekend planning your next weekend shopping at the ‘Yellow Daisy Festival’, I want to provide you a bit of news.  The college football season for 2006 has arrived!

My favorite team, of course, is the Georgia Bulldogs.  We recently had a conversion into the Bulldog Nation, you should pay him a visit from time to time.  The Georgia Bulldogs, heretofore the Dawgs, won their game against the mighty Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.  Final score 48-12.

The highlight – Matthew Stafford, freshman quarterback extraordinaire taking the team down the field in the fourth quarter.  What a wonderful sight to see….

For my boy Hosner, the Noles are 1-0 after spanking Miami….

There are many bloggers out there with Reformed Theological perspectives.  Some, have weird senses of humor – especially when it comes to Darrell Evans music.  This one’s for you Schultzie.  Scroll on down to the music section….

For my boy Miller, has Penn State played a game yet, has Joe Pa kicked the bucket,  does he still wear the Coke Bottles……

For those of you in the know (and some of you in the guess), I have been pondering a decision for a few days now.  My very gracious aunt and uncle in Middle Georgia have offered to sell to our family their house and about 9 acres of land, for a more than very reasonable price.  It is a tough decision, as Kathy and I want to be able to raise our children in a less hectic environment and on some land.  It seems the perfect thing.

But you have got to weigh all of the factors, and I just cannot see how it is the right time to leave Grace Fellowship, and the relationships that God has so graciously placed in our path over the last three years.  I would have to say that right now I am leaning very heavily toward us staying in the Atlanta Metro Area (as long as Dawson County is considered the Atlanta Metro Area).  Stay tuned….

I spent some time listening to some John Piper sermons yesterday as I cut the grass.  Wow… that guy is a great preacher.  He has been going through a series in his podcasts entitled Magnifying God with Money.  The teaser tag line is as follows:

One reason we don’t use money the way God directs us to is because we fear what will happen to us if we don’t keep it for ourselves.

He makes a passionate argument that it is a very difficult thing for a rich man to get into heaven – and he then reminds us how truly rich we are here in America.  It made me think of last Sunday when I filled in for a team leader in the 5th grade Bible Study Class.

The lesson was on God’s requirement placed on us to gain eternal life – i.e. perfect obedience.  The passage used was the one involving the rich young ruler (or man).  After the lesson, I looked at my small group (names shall be withheld, but it is important to know that it was all boys) and asked them if they were rich.

Every one of them said “No”.  When I told them they were all filthy rich, they looked at me like I had a green foot growing out of my forehead.  They were convinced they weren’t rich.

When I reminded them that many children around the world go to bed each evening on a dirt floor, in a plywood box they call a house, with the street outside for a sewer, with no Gameboy, no PlayStation, no air conditioning, no TV and sometimes having only one small meal that day – they seemed to absorb the reality of their wealth.  Operative word: Seemed.

Man.  Only in America, right?  We are blessed beyond measure – both spiritually and financially, and yet it is not enough.  To quote Michael W. Smith:  Pray for me, and I’ll pray for you…..

Nighty nite.
