Buy something from this millennium and get The Fray — and let me borrow it. :)

In the late 80's I played in a band with some older gentlemen who only listened to music from the 60's. They were great musicians but it seemed like they were hanging onto the dream of the Buffalo Springfield sound coming back into mainstream popularity again.

Also check into Matt Wertz's new record — it's got good melody.

BTW. Bruce D. is Dickenson from Iron Maiden. Now don't let the backmasking fear of the 80's scare you here. The band has some of the most potent lyrics of any band. These guys think about what they sing - The War of 1812, Greek Mythology, WWII, etc. I am lyrically sensitive - no obscene-laden songs for me. So, it's a great way to can get your musical fiber without the high flesh calories!

Anything by John Elefante will feature amazing vocals, insightful lyrics and high quality production.

Rik Emmett - vocals with an ax!

Geoff Tate - like listening to an opera on #10

Freddy M? Does anyone listen to lyrics anymore?

Bruce D? Only if you like history.

to continue...

I think there is a difference between a passionate delivery, an angry sounding one, and a purely strained one. I just get agitated when I listen to Chris' music, ballad or rocker. You KNOW I don't need that. ;-)

If you want to hear a great rock/metal singer, go to the iTunes store and look up "Flight of Icarus" by Iron Maiden from the Piece of Mind album. That is a great vocal that only Daughtry could dream about. You can hear Bruce Dickinson has training (not the more cowbell Bruce).

Some other rock vocalists that dwarf Chris:
Freddy Mercury - Queen
Roger Daltry - The Who
Geoff Tate - Queensryche
Gary Cherone - Extreme, VH
Sammy Hagar - VH
Rik Emmett - Triumph
John Elefante - Kansas

I could go on, but you get my point. Listen to them and then you will have the context to appropriately place Chris among his "peers".

As an aside, I have to say Daughtry's vocals sound like a herd of angry, constipated sheep.

My .02

I recommend the new Urban record. I received it for Christmas. More quality stuff from the man in blue and black. I also received the latest U2 record (2004). It is really good as well, in the vein of Joshua Tree.

I recommend not spending the bucks on the new Chris Tomlin CD. I received this through a bait and switch with hunger relief organization (I will blog about that later). Even with the injection of numerous co-writers, after a few listens, it's still pablum to me.

And if you don't have it, Journey's Greatest Hits.
