So, here it is after midnight – and I just finished cleaning out the Chilly Dog studio for the impending house listing – and – Lord willing – sale. For those of you who don’t know, we have put a contract on some land just outside of Knoxville and will be building a home and moving there, just as soon as we can sell our house. I’ll tell you more about that later.
Now – some Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy Thing. I must say that Urban has probably offered up his best work with this collection of well, yes, pop-py country tunes. The album flows from beginning to end and hits only a small rough patch in my opinion. The first song, Once in a Lifetime was built and built well for radio play. Cut two however, is the gem of the album. Shine is just a great song – lyrically – musically – and road map – just beautiful – with clever rhythms – and unique piano work blended in. Of course, most everybody knows and has heard Stupid Boy (unless you stick your head in the sand, or you never listen to country radio or watch CMT). Another gem is Got it Right This Time which sounds like it was recorded in Urban’s bathroom with drum machine and a nice warm Rhodes.
Suffice it to say, whenever I have difficulty identifying my favorite song on a record – I consider it good, but when I have four or more to choose from – I consider it excellent. Bulldawgy gives Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy Thing 9 out of 10 stars – so go buy it.
Or don’t, I really don’t care – I just told you I’d give you a review of my iTunes gift card music – so now you have entry number one.
Oh – and that land is not really in Knoxville – it’s in East Cherokee County – about two thirds of the way from the church to the Dirrim’s. I’ll give you an aerial pic one day.
Bulldawgy out.
My favorite right now is “Used to the Pain”. I has hints at a couple of great tunes of the past. The intro reminds me of “Cruel to be Kind” by Nick Lowe and the orchestrated part reminds me of the horns in the intro to Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4″. I love the vocal backgrounds in the chorus and the audacious guitar lead breaks in the verses. A top notch tune, like the rest.
Sheesh, give me a heart attack.
